With support from the World Bank, STAR Kamuchea set up an NGOs organizing committee and cooperated with DFGG to organize a National Event from 25th to 26th June 2009 at the Imperial Hotel. There were 250 (M=154, F=96) participants in attendance, including 29 government officers, 26 international attendees, 9 people from the media, and 186 from civil society groups.
The national event enabled participants to hear the governments view on social accountability and allowed them to talk with them in a neutral environment; opening up the space for compromise and dialogue. Participants were able to share their experiences which benefitted other organizations, both with national and international experts. Everyone gained a better understanding of what social accountability is and the best ways to pursue and implement it. The government officials who attended also gained a greater understanding of the concept and were educated about what they could do to help civil society achieve this goal. The action plans have been developed together with civil society and government in each province in order to integrate SA in practices. The districts and provincial governors actively discussed the issues raised and planned with the civil society groups in a friendly and positive environment. The Deputy Provincial Governor in Kratie province would like to continue the discussed issues on SA when he returns to duty in the province. Moreover, after the event it was seen a great opportunity for some provincial coordinators to talk with provincial government officials which resulted in closer cooperation than before.
